You Are Worthy

Sometimes songs come in a quiet space with no one else present; other times, they make themselves known in a crowded room, surrounded by people sitting in metal folding chairs under the glare of fluorescent lighting.  "You are Worthy" introduced itself to Amy under just such a crowded room. Listening to a lesson on Job in her small group at church, she was struck by the questions God poses in Job 38-41. Beginning with “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundations?” Amy found herself flipping the script and singing those truths back to God. By Chapter 42 Job’s declaration that God can do all things and no purpose of His can be thwarted prompted the chorus, a declaration about the worthiness and holiness of a good God we can trust.

Colossians 1:15-20

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. And He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross.

I wasn’t there when you set the world in motion
I have never spoken peace to an angry ocean
When the winds are scattered
It’s not because of me

I wasn’t there when you took the dust and made a man
I could never number every single grain of sand
Author of creation
You make the dawn dance in the East

You are worthy
Of nothing less
Than all my praises
With every breath
You are holy
And I am not
I’m desperate for you
Living God
Because you’re good
In all you do

I wasn’t there when you crafted history’s story
I am nothing but a voice for the kingdom coming
When your Son was broken
It was because of me

I wasn’t there when you gave the Revelation
But you have promised me a place near the throne of heaven
With all creation singing
Behold the Lamb of God He reigns

You are worthy
Of nothing less
Than all my praises
With every breath
You are holy
And I am not
I’m desperate for you
Living God
Because you’re good
In all you do

You speak and fear is silenced
You speak peace over me
You speak and chains are broken
You speak and I am free

You speak and the enemy trembles
You speak and the darkness hides
You speak restoration
You speak and hope is mine

You are worthy
Of nothing less
Than all my praises
With every breath
You are holy
And I am not
I’m desperate for you
Living God
Because you’re good
In all you do
