Lilies

Let the Holy Roar - Lilies

"Lilies" was written on the back porch of Amy’s house in the spring of 2022 while reading a book inspired by the work of Rich Mullins. She was struck by the idea that God’s love for us is incomprehensible - even to the angels. God’s love rings out in creation as it reflects His detailed care. Around the throne of heaven God’s love prompts the saints to worship endlessly. His love cannot be measured or contained. And so, we can’t help but sing.

“So, all those things He did that we call ‘miracles’ became believable to us because Christ, who performed them operated out of love - and love (His love at least) has a height and depth and breadth and length that reaches beyond the dimensions of mere reason. And while reasons may be found within His love, no reason would be able to contain His love. It is possible that the evidence of His divinity lies in that love - that in light of love, miracles seem sort of unremarkable. If God can love me, the rest will follow. And Jesus Christ is, for me, the evidence of God’s unreasonable and unsolicited attentiveness, His unearned favor, His incomprehensible love.”

The lilies are clothed
In splendor and seen
The sparrows are fed
And heard when they sing
The mountains that rise up
Would just as soon kneel
If by their bowing
Your glory’s revealed

So how can I not
In wonder and awe
Shout with creation at the goodness of God

Relentless and wild
Extravagant love
With a fury unmatched
You came after us
Prodigal children
Redeemed and restored
To the arms of the Father
By the blood of the Son

The angels lean in
With longing to see
They don’t understand
This love’s mystery

The saints gather round
The throne and they praise
The Lion of Judah
The Lamb who was slain

So how can I not
In wonder and awe
Shout with the heavens at the goodness of God

Relentless and wild
Extravagant love
With a fury unmatched
You came after us
Prodigal children
Redeemed and restored
To the arms of the Father
By the blood of the Son

So I’ll sing to the darkness
I’ll sing til the end
I’ll sing to remember that you call me friend

I’ll sing in the battle
Til victory comes
I’ll sing for the joy that this war has been won

Relentless and wild
Extravagant love
With a fury unmatched
You came after us
Prodigal children
Redeemed and restored
To the arms of the Father
By the blood of the Son
